My grandfather did it on a handshake. My dad did it on a handshake. So do I. When you call JAM Custom Carpentry, I'm the one who answers — and I'm the one who shows up. No crew, no subcontractors, no surprises. Just me, twenty years of experience, and a commitment to standing behind my work the way it used to be done.
Most carpenters avoid door problems — they're finicky, time-consuming to diagnose, and every old house throws something different at you. That's exactly why I built my reputation on them. Won't latch, squeaks, binds, been broken for years — I've seen it all. Old mortise locks, out-of-square frames from decades of settling, hardware that hasn't been made since 1960. I can diagnose almost any door in a single visit and fix it on the spot. It's not luck. It's twenty years of doing this until it became second nature.
Historic hardware specialty
Most locksmiths won't touch an old mortise lock — and most carpenters don't know how they work. I do. If your home has original mortise hardware from the early 1900s, I can repair and rebuild it so it works like it was meant to — keeping the character of your home exactly as it should be.
Finish carpentry, millwork, and painting — all done by one person who takes pride in every detail.
Diagnosis, tuning, rehang, and restoration. Standard sizes and the impossible ones — non-square openings, historic mortise locks, out-of-plumb frames.
Most requestedRotted sills and casing are the most common call — and the trickiest to do right. The surrounding framing and woodwork has to come apart carefully, piece by piece, without disturbing what's still good. Where possible, I restore rather than replace, using fillers and formed pieces to match the original profile exactly. No shortcuts.
Surgical precisionMuch of the trim work in older homes is no longer available to replace — it simply doesn't exist anymore. This is where I come in. I mill unconventional sizes and shapes to get as close to the original aesthetic as possible, matching profiles that haven't been manufactured in decades. If it can't be bought, it can be made.
Custom profilesCustom built-ins — wall shelving, cabinetry, and built-in benches — are available on a limited basis. These are time-intensive, one-of-a-kind projects built specifically for your space. I take on one or two per month at most, so the craftsmanship never gets rushed. If you have something in mind, reach out and let's talk through what's possible.
By inquiry onlyOlder homes — especially pre-1940 Craftsman bungalows and Victorians throughout the Twin Cities — require a different level of care and knowledge. I understand the materials, the profiles, and the quirks that come with a century-old home, and I treat every detail with the respect it deserves.
Old homes welcomeThe jobs other carpenters won't schedule for. A single piece of damaged trim, a sticky drawer, a gap that's been bugging you for years. No job is too small if it matters to you — and I'll give it the same attention as any bigger project.
No job too smallTrim, doors, windows, walls, and ceilings — all done by the same pair of hands. I can take a room from tired to transformed without a crew of strangers walking through your home. New trim goes in, everything gets painted to match — walls, ceilings, and all the finish woodwork — and you get one person accountable for every bit of it from start to finish.
Complete transformationI grew up in Oshkosh, Wisconsin — the Fox Valley, once home to Paine Lumber Company, which by 1908 had become the world's largest manufacturer of sashes and doors. Wood, craft, and building things right were in the air I grew up breathing.
I learned the trade young, watching and working alongside my uncle — a mentor who is still teaching me to this day. My shop class teacher challenged me in ways that shaped how I think about joinery and woodworking. I went on to earn a Residential Construction Technical Diploma from Fox Valley Technical College, and a Bachelor's degree in American History and Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. The history degree wasn't an accident — I've always believed that understanding where things come from is what makes you better at preserving them.
Three years ago I moved to the Twin Cities for opportunity and community. I wanted a larger city with a small-town feel — neighbors who know each other, a community that's connected and cares. I bought a home here with my partner Veronica and I'm not leaving. Once a Wisconsinite, proudly. But a Minnesotan for life.
When you hire JAM Custom Carpentry, you get me — Jason Allen Meyer — every single time. JAM are my initials, but there's a fitting coincidence in there too: the door jamb is the heart of my craft, and it sounds just like my name. Different spelling, same dedication. I answer the phone, I show up, I do the work, and I stand behind it. My grandfather worked that way. My dad worked that way. I don't know any other way to do it.

"From the first meet Jason was professional and very knowledgeable about his craft. He helped with ideas, material selection, and the install was seamless. He did crown moulding and base trim in my upper level. Very satisfied with the finished project. He is polite, tidy, and very animal friendly! His pricing was competitive and his eye for detail was worth every penny."
"We had a great experience working with Jason on our 100-year-old home. He was able to replace the panel glass in our French door — something several others said couldn't be done — and the result looks fantastic. He also repaired a few stubborn kitchen drawers and completed some tricky trim work around the kitchen corners. Everything blends in beautifully with the existing woodwork. Skilled, thoughtful craftsmanship and great attention to detail. Highly recommended."
"Jason does excellent work. He is skilled, efficient, and most importantly a truthful and transparent advisor. He is also extremely detail oriented — his work on our kitchen renovation was excellent and the care he puts into his craftsmanship was apparent. Would recommend to anyone looking for help with a renovation!"
